about
Assembled during March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine. All original recordings are from 2005-2020.
This track was originally an essay. I was writing an essay that started from the external (outside, other people, etc.) and worked its way inward, all the way into the very intimate spaces we rarely share with others. The essay was never completed, existing as an outline or skeletal structure of a much larger idea. I began thinking of the idea as sound, which gave me a language that felt more flexibly creative.
I recorded the outside world around our home, which included the boats, the train, the insects and wind, the carried voices of neighborhood children and birds. Later, in February, I used contact microphones to record the inside of a water cooling machine at a friend's place. This inner recording of the machine felt very intimate. I recorded the machine while listening to the details in my headphones, almost getting to a truly meditative state. There are some earlier sound fragments in the final mix.
The track here is named for the creek that wraps behind our home. It feels like the sounds almost reflect life. When we are young, we are surrounded by the external world, entranced by it. As we age, the focus on our internal world becomes both necessary and inevitable.
